Our fabulous local produce is positively bursting with flavour and goodness and everything else that the good earth has blessed us with, thanks to Shropshire's noble soil.
Visit us during one of the many festivals and enjoy proper food, real ale and locally made products. Our Shropshire Towns have so much to offer and nature's influence is seen in all they produce. Pick up a copy of Taste Shropshire & the Marches magazine for foody news and reviews.
The quality of locally produced meat, game, fruit, vegetables, dairy products and preserves is of paramount importance to our visitors who all appreciate the taste of Shropshire food and drink at its best. Heart of England Fine Foods is on hand to help our local restaurateurs and producers come together to give visitors the best possible experience of locally produced food.
Our aptly named town, Market Drayton has been running a market every Wednesday for well over 750 years. Stalls are laden with fresh produce and an abundance of different wares to bring in the bargain hunter. The town is also the home of gingerbread. It's been baked here for over 200 years, to a traditional and closely guarded secret recipe. Some say rum is included; but just in case it isn't, the locals tend to dip it in port before they eat it.
All this locally grown and produced food has helped Ludlow create its own reputation for gastronomy, by enticing chefs from all over the country to bring their skills to Ludlow dinner tables.
It's true: Ludlow may have found fame for its Michelin Stars and for being the very epicentre of the UK's Slow Food movement, but all the local eateries seem to have drawn inspiration from those facts. Perhaps too it's because so much outstanding local produce fills the busy markets and delicatessens; and this excellent fare now filters into every aspect of dining, from picnic to pub lunch to candleit dinner.
Many restaurants display the 'Local to Ludlow' logo and will be able to tell you exactly where certain ingrediants come from.
Ludlow's
festivals are renowned the world
over; with Shakespeare in the
castle in the summer, a wonderful
feast at Marches Food and Drink
Festival which takes place every
September, where you can see
Shropshire's smogasbord laden
with wholesome, home-grown,
home cooked dishes (not to mention
the drinks to wash them down
with). And don't forget the
atmospheric Medieval Fayre in
November.
The spectacular Shropshire Hills provide the richly contrasting terrain that forms the bedrock on which Shropshire's fields and pastures grow. It is upon our golden, emerald, and blue remembered hills that a lot of growing and grazing goes on. Much of our local produce is availble in all of our market towns, shops, pubs, inns, restaurants, delicatessens and markets.
Microbreweries are spread out across the county from Hobsons in Cleobury Mortimer, to the Corfton Brewery in the Corvedale. You'll also find Woods Brewery in Wistanstow and out in Bishop's castle you'll come accross the Six Bells and Three Tuns Breweries. All these fine ales are celebrated, not just in the local pubs, but during the festivals held in Ludlow, Church stretton, Clun and Bishop's Castle throughout the year.
Shrewsbury, our county town is simply bursting with fine restaurants and pubs all serving delicious food and drink.
Of course, we are not selfish in Shropshire and you can even take a bit of this Shropshire abundance away with you; fill your basket from our numerous award winning 'deli's', many of whom provide home smoked bacon from Maynards, organic food from Pimhill, Market Drayton Gingerbread, Quails eggs, local cheeses and real dairy ice-cream.
To wash it all down with don't forget wines from Tanners in Shrewsbury or from the Wroxeter Roman Vineyard.
So why not buy some before it's all snapped up by Buckingham Palace and Harrods? (They know quality when they come across it).
Come to Shropshire and stay in welcoming accommodation, eat local food, sample the local brew and enjoy the wide variety of events taking place throughout the year. You'll wish you'd booked to stay longer.
